Relatos JELB - Israel (parte 1)

Eu sou a Mariah! Em outubro de 2018 tive a incrível chance de conhecer a região de Israel, e por isso tô aqui nesse espaço tão lindo do site da JELB, pra compartilhar um pouco da minha experiência por lá. É muito legal escrever aqui (vocês não fazem ideia o quanto!), e eu faço questão de dizer por que to tão emocionada: faz uns 5 anos que estou envolvida com essa área internacional da JELB, ajudando na coleta de vários relatos que foram postados aqui ao longo dos anos. Agora, depois de reunir tantos textos alheios de pessoas que viajaram ou moram no exterior, chegou a minha vez de contribuir!!! :D

Ok. Como diria nosso estimado amigo Jack, vamos por partes.

Começamos do começo. Eu sou graduada em Relações Internacionais e atualmente faço parte do programa de mestrado em Direito Europeu e Alemão da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul vinculado a uma rede internacional de Centros de Estudos Europeus e Alemães, onde pesquiso sobre os recentes movimentos migratórios na Europa. É por causa desse meu background acadêmico e do meu vínculo com esse Centro que em outubro desse ano fui contemplada com uma bolsa pra ir a Haifa, a terceira maior cidade da região de Israel, participar de um seminário sobre religião e política, organizado pelo Centro de Estudos Europeus e Alemães de lá. Além de Haifa, onde passei a maior parte do meu tempo, aproveitei a oportunidade ímpar de estar na região para visitar outras cidades. Eu poderia escrever um livro sobre todas as coisas interessantes e diferentes que vivi por lá, mas aqui vou me ater a duas grandes temáticas, que vou explicar rapidamente abaixo.

Primeiro, quero dar um panorama geral sobre Haifa, já que sei que, embora seja a terceira maior cidade do país (como já disse ali em cima), poucos conhecem ou sequer ouviram falar. Eu mesma não sabia muito sobre a cidade quando fiquei sabendo que ia pra lá. Israel não é só Jerusalém, não, gente! Embora Haifa não carregue o peso histórico-judaico-cristão que outras cidades da região têm, foi bastante interessante entender mais sobre a cultura dos israelenses e palestinos, que, dentre outras coisas, me ajudaram a compreender melhor os fundamentos da minha própria fé cristã.

Por fim, a intenção é falar sobre Israel e Palestina, não tanto no sentido religioso, mas mais com um viés político no geral. Os conflitos entre as diversas etnias na região de Israel são bastante sérios ainda hoje, e eu queria explicar um pouco disso, pra fugir do tradicional. Além disso, como já deve ser de conhecimento de todos vocês, assíduos seguidores das redes sociais da JELB, há algum tempo o pastor Roberto Kunzendorff fez para a JELB uma série de vídeos sobre a região de Israel focando no aspecto cristão, então não faria sentido eu vir aqui só repetir em texto informações e imagens que já foram compartilhadas de uma forma muito mais legal em vídeo, né?

Enfim, galerinha. Espero que gostem do que vem a seguir, escrevi com muito carinho e alegria. I'm Mariah! On past October I had the incredible chance to get to know the region of Israel and I am going to share some of my experience. It's very cool to write here (you have no idea how much!), and I want to say why I am so excited about it: I've been involved with the international department of Brazilian Lutheran Youth for 5 years now, helping to collect several reports that have been shared on this same section over the past. Now, after gathering so many texts from other people that went or live abroad, it is my turn to contribute with a text by my own!!! :D

Ok then. As our dear friend Jack would say, let’s go by parts.

We start from the beginning. I have a bachelor’s degree in International Relations and currently I am a masters student in European and German Law in the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, linked to the Brazilian Center of German and European Studies, where I do my research on recent migratory movements in Europe. It is because of this academic background of mine that I earned a fellowship to go to Haifa, the third largest city in the region of Israel, in order to attend a seminar on religion and politics promoted by the Haifa Center for German and European Studies. In addition to Haifa, where I spent most of my time, I took the unique opportunity that was to be in the region of Israel to visit other cities. Believe me, I could write a whole book about all the interesting and different things I have experienced there, but here I will stick to two great topics, which I will explain briefly below.

First, I want to give a general overview of Haifa, since that, although it is the third largest city in the country (as I said above), I am pretty sure that only few people know or even ever heard of it. I did not know much about the city myself when I became aware of the fellowship. Israel is not only Jerusalem, people! Although Haifa does not carry the historical-Jewish-Christian weight that other cities in the region carry, it was quite interesting to understand more about the culture of the Israelis and Palestinians (we are going to talk more about this later!) that, among a billion other things, helped me to better understand the fundamentals of my own Christian faith.

Finally, the intention is to give an overview of Jerusalem and Palestine, not so based in religion, but more with a political bias in general. The conflicts between the various races in the region of Israel are still very sensitive today, and I want to explain some of it, to skip the usual. Besides that, Pastor Roberto Kunzendorff already made a series of videos about the region of Israel focusing on the Christian theme, so it would not make sense for me just to repeat in text tons of information that have already been shared in a much cooler way on video, right?

Anyway, folks. I hope you like what comes next, because I wrote all of it with lots of affection and joy.
